The Joy of Accumulating Animals…
I’ve been accumulating animals over the past week. Just 8 days ago I got my first shipment of chicks, followed by a foster dog, a load of turkeys, and two barn cats. The chicks are already getting so big!
Long over-due update
Writing from my farmhouse bedroom-for-the-week in Vlagtwedde, NE Nederlands… My days here are relaxed and filled with weeding, eating yummy Italian food, and trying to comprehend a book written for 10-year-old girls. Dutch 10-year-olds I mean! This is a kind of week long retreat from… my half year Europe retreat… The last month I spent […]
Phytophthora infestans!
24 July 2009 — Yesterday when Jenn did a final walk around of the farm, everthing looked healthy and in order. This morning while we were searching through the herbs for marjoram to fill an order, I looked over and commented “those tomatos don’t really look too good, I hope they don’t have the blight…”. […]
Sunday News
28 June 2009 This morning was the strawberry festival at one of the bigger farms in the area. We went early to pick (aka eat) for a while, then wandered around to enjoy the feeling of a summer fair: old tractors to gawk at, greenhouses full of fresh-smelling flowers, hippies and their hippie children, horse-drawn […]
A Day in the Life
Today was Brittany’s (one of the other interns) birthday. It was a little razy because we also had market this afternoon… but it was really fun and probably the first real bonding I felt with the other interns! Also I baked a cake which didn’t come out horribly and there was only one big moment […]
In Vermont
I have arrived at my new home in Vermont!!!! As you saw in the pictures, I spent a few days in Boston with my friend Maggie before coming here. We went to the Arnold Arboretum and wandered around downtown and ate a lot of yummy chinesse food at a yummy brunch place and generally had […]
Quick update
Hey y’all! I will write more later but just want to make a quick update for now. I am home right now but packing (trying to fit everything into a backpacking backpack is harder than I’d thought) to head out to Vermont! My stay at home has been lovely…. I’ve been enjoying the leaves coming […]
Thoughts on Statia
I have now been here on Statia for 3 weeks… one strange hurricane week but now 2 weeks of settling into a routine and getting to now the area — the plants and animals and the culture, and what I’m going to be doing here. We’ll start with my routine: I am working at the […]
Hurricane!
Directly after my last cocky entry about how the hurricane didn’t seem that bad I left with the other new volunteers to head back to the garden. By the time we got back, feeling very good about ourselves for having changed a flat tire and gotten unlost several times, we were informed to pack everything […]
Statia!
For those of you who don’t know, I arrived two days ago on St. Eustatius, a tiny island in the Netharlands Antilles in the Carribbean. Just east of Puerto Rico and the US Virgen Islands. I am an intern here with the National Park system, working mostly in the botanical garden. Yesterday I spent most […]
