A Day in the Life
Today was Brittany’s (one of the other interns) birthday. It was a little razy because we also had market this afternoon… but it was really fun and probably the first real bonding I felt with the other interns! Also I baked a cake which didn’t come out horribly and there was only one big moment of complete chaos, so that’s pretty good for me!
So here is the basic story of what work is like on the far: I work 5 days a week plus market on Saturday. Monday through Friday we start work at 8, but before that I usually walk out to the cow and sheep pastures to make sure they are all still inside the fencing and happy, and thy have water and aren’t in any sort of trouble. So from 8-12:30 we (me, Brittany, and Shannon– who lives in town but comes out to work every ady and LOVES the place) work pretty much on our own. Jenn (the boss) makes a list in the morning of things for us to work on. Generally it involves… weeding, mulching, planting, harvesting, checking/building electric fence lines, and cleaning animal pens. In the afternoons we continue with that sort of stuff, or help Jenn or Kyle with something else around the farm (maybe pickling eggs or moving livestock or something like that). We get done at 5. Then on Saturday we leave for market around 8, so start getting ready as early as 6 if possible. Market is really fun, selling to old rich yuppies and their young hipster Vermont children. By the time we get back and unload (2ish) we’re done for the weekend!
Saturday I think I’ll be relaxing a lot, but Saturday nights there is a contra dance about 20 minutes away I’ll probably go to sometimes. Last Sunday Brittany and I went to Hanover and wandered around Dartmuth campus and drank fancy coffee and snuck into the fancy library and generally had a really nice time!
So that’s my life! It’s really great so far, but I’ve only been here just over a week. It is soooo beautiful in Vermont, you should all come visit me out here! Besides that, I”ll update and add pictures as the summer goes along!
