7-12-07 Island near Montezuma

I am spending the day today stuck on this island near Rainsong Wildlife Sanctuary, fishing and relaxing. It is so nice out here, with no thought of the future or the past. So at low tide this morning, around 10, we walked out on a land bridge, began fishing and watched the bridge close up. Fishing in the ocean is way fun, especially as the tide is coming in and the waves smash my body and tangle the lure, it’s like man against nature. I have had no bites yet, which is unfortunate but not unexpected. I’m just using a coil of line witha hook and a fish tail for bait.

Right now I’m sitting in the middle of the island, where there is a cemetary. On the souds of leaves rustling and waves crashing, occasional birds or lizards rusting through the yucca. The cemetary is ancient and powerful feeling, with lots of plants and flowers, large headstones, and complegely disorderly locations for the gravesites.

A couple of days ago I hiked up about 10 minutes to get to a waterfall. It was really pretty and I got to swim a bit although there were little crayfish nibbling my towes. On the way back I saw howler monkeys. They are very small but make such a HUGE noise!

10-12-07 Puntarenas

This morning I left the safety of Rainsong for more crazyness and adventure. After several buses I was riding a ferry to Puntarenas. Along the way I met a very intersting guy from Israel who lives in Cabuya. It is awesome how many people I meet here from different cultures. We took the bus together to get across Puntarenas, where he was going to San Jose and me to Monteverde. On the bus I got off first and he was behind, but this lady dropped her purse and while he was held back another guy took his wallet from his bag. But luckily he was on to it and wouldn’t get off till he got his wallet back, so he didn’t lose anything. Good reminder to keep my head up and aware.

So I made it to the bus station fine but the last bus had left to Monteverde. Although I had been warned that Puntarenas is dangerous, it seemed quite safe to me during the day anyhow. I found a nice inexpensive hotel and spent the evening reorganizing my stuff and collecting my thoughs, writing and reading and even a quick workout routine and some yoga. Nice to have private space and time. At first I was pissed to be stuck here, but now I’m glad to have this time. So the morel is, work with what you’ve got and enjoy it.

12-12-07 La Catarata de San Luis

So when I got to Monteverde, well Santa Elena really, I went first to the Orchid garden to see if there was work there. They already had help, which is sad because walking around there it is like heaven on earth, beautiful, peaceful full of gorgeous plants and cute friendly dogs and just a really nice vibe. But anyways, the really nice owner said although he couldn’t take me, his aunt sometimes needed help and I could head out and stay with her at the Catarata de San Luis. So I headed out walking, cause I’m too cheap to pay for a taxi. I was so crazy, walking down the road not really sure where the heck i’m going to… like I though it was wierd heading out to Vermont to stay with a family I didn’t know at all… at least I’d emailed with her, I knew who all lived there, I knew what exactly they did, AND I spoke the same language. Well, anyways, they’re very hospitable, they’re certainly not going to kidnap me and if I decide I want to go I’m sure they won’t stop me. We will see how it goes!

Ok there’s lots more to say but I will update that all later. I need to go be friendly and helpful to this family who’s letting me stay here now…..
