Something actually happened today besides petting the cat
Ok, for those of you who are getting bored with my long accounts of petting the cats and stuff, maybe starting to think a farmer’s life is pretty slow and boring, I have a real news story today! But first I just want to mention to all my extensive viewing audience that if you ever read this and feel compelled to write a comment or write me an email, please do so! It’s getting kinda lame writing all these reports and the only one who’s reading it is my mum. I mean if that’s how it is, I’ll just call her on the phone. Ok, onwards to describe my exciting day!
So the morning was pretty slow and all… pulled apart some garlic, got bored and went to listen to NPR while cleaning mandrake roots or whatever they’re really called, and decided to go for a bit of a run. So I got all into my running clothes and was just heading out when I looked out across the field and saw…. a bunch of sheep in the garden! Welll these sheep like I think I already said are living more or less free-style up across the road… but not in the garden! And then I looked harder and there was also… a cow in the garden? The cows are next to the garden in a heavily fenced and electrified pasture…. Well, so I thought about ignoring it and running anyways but they sheep seemed to be going somewhere and eatting a lot of plants, so with a sigh I gave up my run and did what I knew I ought to. I started trying to gather all the sheep back into a herd. At first I was trying to get them back up into the pasture (by the way the poor horse pastured with the sheep was still in the pasture and freaking out cause his buddies were gone). But on the way up there there were a lot of places where sheep could wander off or loose themselves, and these sheep were impressed with their freedom and ingenuity and not into going home. Plus the stupid “sheep dog” kept running back and forth and getting all excitied and chasing the sheep generally exactly where ever I didn’t want them. So I finally switched tacks and herded them gently into a corner against the cow pen. Then I tried to inundate in their little sheep brains that they should stay there, and then ran flat out up to the barn to grab the little extra fencing I’d seen earlier. Flat run back… the sheep are all over the place again. So I herded em up again, and tried to get the fence around them. Half an hour and a lot of escaped sheep later, I had all the sheep IN a small pasture, the escaped cow OUT of the sheep pasture (although there was no way he was going back into the cow pen), and Michael the horse calmed down a bit. So I went ahead on my run… by the time I got back another stupid cow had gotten out, but luckily Jenn got back before I had to worry about him. So we put all the sheep and the horse down in a different and more heavily fenced pasture and got the cows back in with some grain and coaxing. So alls well now, but it was pretty exciting and pretty energetic for a while there!
In other EXTREMELY exciting news… I cooked my most successful meal ever, and I believe the first meat dish I have EVER cooked. And the meat actually turned out about the best of any of it. Plus a lot of it was made from scratch with fresh garden ingredients. And a lot of the rest was more or less guessed or made up as I went along. It was Venezuelan, arepa with beans and carne asada and cheese and avocado, and fried plaintains with garlic cilantro dip. Mmmmmm….. arepa! For those of you who know me very well or have ever eatten my cooking, this is quite an exciting accomplishment in my life, a day which will go down in infamy!
Hmmmm not much else new. I am sadly becoming addicted to the TV series LOST. Sad I know, but ya know. It’s better than I though it would be, very psychological. I’m also becoming very addicted to Cat Stevens…. the inspirational message of the day is:
Oh I can’t keep it in,
I can’t keep it in, I’ve gotta let it out.
I’ve got to show the world, world’s got to see,
see all the love love that’s in me.
I said, why walk alone,
why worry when it’s warm over here.
You’ve got so much to say, say what you mean,
mean what you’re thinking, and think anything.
Oh why, why must you waste you’re life away,
you’ve got to live for today, then let it go
Oh, lover, I want to spend this time with you,
there’s nothing I wouldn’t do, If you let me know.
And I can’t keep it in,
I can’t hide it and I can’t lock it away.
I’m up for your love, love heats my blood,
blood spins my head, and my head falls in love, oh.
No, I can’t keep it in,
I can’t keep it in, I’ve gotta let it out.
I’ve gotta show the world, world’s got to know,
know of the love, love that lies low, so
Why can’t you say,
If you know, then why can’t you say.
You’ve got too much deceit, deceit kills the light,
light needs to shine, I said shine light , shine light.
Love, That’s no way to live your life,
you allow too much to go by, and that won’t do.
No, lover. I want to have you here by my side
Now don’t you run, don’t you hide, while I’m with you.
‘N I can’t keep it in,
I can’t keep it in, I’ve gotta let it out.
I’ve got to show the world, world’s got to see,
see all the love love that’s in me.
I said, why walk alone,
why worry when it’s warm over here.
You’ve got so much to say, say what you mean,
mean what you’re thinking, and think anything. Why not?
Now why why why not?
